Phase II - Build a Rocket

Building Instructions

DP Parameters

Phase I – Student Becomes the Teacher

In this phase of the project, you will become the teacher. In a group of three, you will conduct a 20-minute lesson on a specific topic related to rockets. Planning a lesson takes a lot of research and work before you can present. Each group member is responsible for a different part (called
a deliverable) and each person has a unique role in the group.

Roles & Responsibilities

What is my role?

What do I do?

What is my deliverable?

Project Manager

  • Makes sure each group member knows what to do
  • Makes sure each group member stays on task

  • Research paper
  • Team performance reports

Lesson Architect

  • Leads the design of the lesson plan by soliciting input from all group members

  • Lesson plan
  • Post-lesson reflection

Materials Designer

  • Designs the materials to be used in the lesson through frequent conference with lesson architect
  • Delegates some materials to other group members
  • Organizes materials for the day of the lesson

  • Lesson materials
  • Materials inventory

Everyone

  • Complete research on the topic
  • Assist group members
  • Participate in lesson

  • Daily blog reflections

Group assignments can be seen here

Research Topics

Rocket Shapes & Sizes

Research the different shapes, sizes, and types of rockets. Give an overview of the different types of rockets and their purpose.

Rocket Propulsion

Research the different types of rocket engines and fuels. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Rocket Systems

What are the different parts of the rockets the class is designing? What are the parts of a rocket in general?

History of Rocketry

Who invented rockets? What have they been used for? How were they invented? How have they changed over time?

Modern Rocketry

Who, how, where: Who uses rockets? How are they used? Where are they used (in what jobs)?

The Space Race

What was the Space Race? Who was involved? What happened? What rockets were used?

Center of Gravity vs. Center of Pressure

What is a center of gravity? What is a center of pressure? In rocketry, how are they related?

The Physics of Rockets

What physical principles relate to rockets? What principles do you need to know in order to understand a rocket?
