Invisible Children

Invisible Children

In the summer of 2007, I traveled to Gulu, Uganda after watching
a documentary called Invisible Children. The documentary was a
story told by three boys from San Diego who learned that boys in
Uganda were being adbucted and forced to fight in a civil war. As a
way to escape this forced fighting, they left their homes in the bush
of the coutry to sleep in urban centers. The documentary was their
story. The documentary makers were inspried to help their situation,
and I, too, was inspired to do something. Although my feeble hands
are capable of little, I knew that traveling to Uganda was a starting point.
So, through the Invisible Children organization (founded after the documentary was complete) I went on a teacher exchange. I returned
with a mission: to help raise funds for the school where I taught. So that is precisely what our SIG will do. After learning about the hisroty of the
region, students will plan and implement fundraising events for the
invisible children of Sir Samuel Baker school. Students came up with amazing events, and we had so much fun. The art auction was a huge success, and the tee shirt creation campaign was as much fun to plan
as the shirts were to sell. I look forward to another year where students
learn to not only implement events, but to impact the world in a positive way. That is truly the spirit of the organization. Seeing children care so much about children across the globe was one of the most moving
experiences of my life, and I hope to be a part of this ttpe of service
learning for as long as I live.
